Happy Memorial Day!

Memorial Day originated in 1868, when Union General John A. Logan designated a day in which the graves of Civil War soldiers would be decorated.

Known as Decoration Day, the holiday was changed to Memorial Day within twenty years, becoming a holiday dedicated to the memory of all war dead. It became a federal holiday in 1971, and is now observed on the last Monday in May.

Earthquake Tremors Last Night! May 23, 2013

We had an earthquake last night @ 8:47 pm. * Did you feel it? * It wasn't a jolt.
If you were driving, talking, walking or moving about; you might not have felt it.
But if you were sitting still you would have felt the foundation sway from side to side in a rocking motion.  No, not high blood pressure * A real tremor.
It lasted a few seconds.

Let me go check this out * I'll be right back

Oklahoma

Jon Carson, BarackObama.com
to me

Donna --

We're all still stunned and saddened by the destructive tornadoes that hit Oklahoma yesterday. As the people of Moore and Newcastle grieve and begin the long path to recovery, our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Thank you to all the first responders, teachers, and community members who've selflessly helped their friends and neighbors in this moment of hardship.

President Obama promised to make sure that in the weeks and months to come, the communities affected will get everything they need.

If you'd like to help with the relief efforts, please consider supporting the Red Cross today:

"This is just adorable"

Organizing for Action
to me
Donna --

This is just adorable in every way.Myles, a 7-year-old from Milwaukee, wrote Vice President Biden a letter to suggest that if guns shot chocolate bullets, no one would get hurt. The Vice President wrote back. Take a look at his response, then share it with your friends:
Dear Myles --

I am sorry it took me so very long to respond to your letter.I really like your idea. If we had guns that shot chocolate, not only would our country be safer, it would be happier. People love chocolate. You are a good boy.-- Joe Biden

Donna --

This week, OFA volunteers are hand-delivering a petition to Congress with the names of every OFA supporter who's fighting to reduce gun violence.

According to our most recent records, it looks like you've already signed it:

    -- Petition status: Signed
-- Suggested action: Share with five friends

Thanks for adding your name -- right now, will you ask five friends to add their names, too?

http://my.barackobama.com/Sign-the-Petition

We have to keep the pressure on Congress to move on background checks -- and only you can hold your members of Congress accountable.

It's a make-or-break moment for our movement -- a real test of our commitment to keep fighting, even when it gets hard, for the things we believe in.

Thanks for all your help,

Sara

Tonight's policy briefing: How you can support immigration reform

Abby Witt, BarackObama.com
to me

Donna --

Right now, the Senate is working on a bill that will fix our broken immigration system -- and in tonight's policy briefing, we'll give you the latest and talk about ways we can help make it happen.

We'll be joined by Angie Kelley, vice president for immigration policy at the Center for American Progress. A daughter of immigrants, Angie has been on the frontlines of the fight for immigration reform for many years, as a lawyer and as the former executive director of the Immigration Policy Center.

Angie will tell us where we stand, how the amendment process works in Congress, and how you can pitch in to help get the bill across the finish line in the Senate.

It's all coming up tonight in our weekly policy briefing at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time -- join in here:

Thanks for all you do,

Abby

Obama's second-term Cabinet

Three months after being sworn in to a second term, President Barack Obama has nearly completed his Cabinet overhaul. But the White House is taking fire from critics complaining about a lack of diversity. Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx was nominated on April 29 as transportation secretary. If confirmed, he would become the second African American in Obama's current Cabinet after Attorney General Eric Holder, who continues at the Justice Department.
