Happy Memorial Day!

 

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is celebrated every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Two years ago, President Obama set an ambitious goal: to attract 100 million international visitors to the United States each year by the end of 2021.  Here's where we are:

 

More than 70 million travelers from around the world visited the U.S. in the last year alone--and they spent more than $180 billion.  That's huge, and it means big things for our economy. 

 

It's part of the great news the President is sharing at the Baseball Hall of Fame in  Cooperstown, New York today.  And it's one of the reasons he designated a new National Monument in New Mexico yesterday--permanently protecting nearly 500,000 acres as part of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.  

 

In honor of the occasion, the Department of the Interior took over our @WhiteHouse Instagram account yesterday to share some of their favorite photos of our great American outdoors.

We just completed our record-setting spring program, and we're jumping right into the next one -- all about training the next generation of progressive organizers. It will run during July and August. Here are some words people use to describe it: challenging, powerful, inspiring, and -- my favorite -- so much fun.

If someone you know is looking to take their organizing skills to the next level, pass this application along today.

Summer fellows will have the chance to develop all the skills needed to be top-notch organizers -- learning to run phone banks, conduct press conferences, and rally support around the issues important to their communities.

It doesn't matter what your experience level is -- I've seen this program be a career-rocketing first step into the world of progressive organizing. And it can be a huge boost for people who've been active in the progressive movement for decades.

What $10.10 would mean for your state

In this year’s State of the Union address, President Obama called on Congress to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour.

That would benefit more than 28 million workers -- helping families across the country make ends meet.

But exactly how would it help? We’ll show you.

In Texas, for example, almost 3 million workers would benefit from raising the minimum wage. And the additional earnings from a $10.10 wage could help a full-time, full-year minimum-wage worker afford either six months of rent, 36 weeks of groceries, or 103 tanks of gas over the course of a year.
